Although it was late 1944/early 1945, the Waffen-SS personnel at Bachem Werke still carried on their strict dress code and personal appearance as this picture shows. Flessner had served with the Waffen-SS at the Russian Front, was wounded, and sent back to Germany for hospitalization. Had he not been wounded, he told this author, in all likelihood he would have been captured by the Soviets as were his entire division and later died in captivity as they did.
