2 DIRECT NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF COUNTERCURRENT SHEAR FLOW In previous papers, the authors have reported on progress in various steps in the development of an advanced multidomain spectral element code for simulations of turbulent two-phase flows [1, 2]. This code was also applied for simulation of the flow over a square cylinder and the channel flow for preliminary assessments. The major task undertaken as a part of the code development eff'orts during the past year was implementation of the Message Pctssing Interface (MPI) such that the code could be run on parallel computers.

For DNS, a multidomain spectral element method was used for the carrier phase while tracking the droplets individually in a Lagrangian frame. The geometry considered here is a backward-facing step flow with and without a countercurrent shear. In PDF modeling, the extension of previous work to the case of evaporating droplets is discussed. 1 INTRODUCTION The need for optimized and stable operation under various conditions has promoted a growing interest in control of combustion in systems involving liquid fuels.
